Hanscom Middle School Student Emma Dominy has good advice about spending and saving money. So good, in fact, that her essay on the topic was chosen out of 800 entries as a finalist in the 27th Annual Massachusetts Student Essay Contest.

The contest is coordinated each year by the Cooperative Credit Union Association (CCUA). Ms. Dominy was honored, along with eight other Massachusetts seventh and eighth graders, at a celebratory luncheon at the Holiday Inn in Marlborough hosted by the Massachusetts chapters of the CCUA.

Emma read from her essay responding to the question: What could you teach an adult to form better savings and spending habits? She cautioned readers to be aware of how businesses tempt consumers with sales tactics, and encouraged them to shop wisely.

“Sometimes you may have to make hard decisions,” Ms. Dominy stated. She also reminded readers to think of those less fortunate. “You could also use this [saved] money to help others who may need the cash more than you do.”
