Lt Col Frank Sobchak, a Green Beret, was selected as Hanscom FCU’s Hero Among Us for the July 21 Lowell Spinners home game at LeLacheur Park.

Col Sobchak, a 24-year member of the US Army, has deployed multiple times and served in numerous command and staff positions. Most notably, he was Garrison Commander for the Natick Soldier System Center in Natick, MA from 2011to 2013.

The list of Col Sobchak’s accomplishments includes numerous awards and trainings that combine physical fitness, readiness, community involvement, and academic excellence. He is also a father of four children.

“What amazes me the most about him is how he balances so much in his life and still manages to succeed at all of the things he does,” wrote his wife, Iris Sobchak, herself a retired lieutenant colonel with a 23-year military career. “He is a superb officer who was just as comfortable as a garrison commander as he was leading a Special Forces company in Iraq.”

Currently, Col Sobchak is a senior fellow for the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Operation Iraqi Freedom Study Group, writing the Army Official history of the War in Iraq.

Hanscom FCU’s heroes are nominated by the public and celebrated throughout the summer at selected home games. Honorees are recognized at a pre-game ceremony, throw out the first pitch and are treated to a luxury suite for 10 with passes to the Gator Pit barbecue area.
